Week 3 - PowerPoint Publishing Magazine

On Tuesday's afternoon session I was creating my power point and refining my skills profile. In this lesson I was improving in visually presenting  my power point to my audience. So that there isn't too much text and more enlarged pictures to show.

In wednesday's morning session, I finished off my powerpoint. After I had done this, I started to experiment using my techniques from  my research.  I did this so that it would help me to practise my techinques and use these techinques effectively when it comes to designing my arts & creative magazine.  Here are some of the Images which I created;

Below are the original Images;

As you can see the Images are manipulated using simple tools such as the gradient bucket, sharpen tool and the blur tool. These tools transformed the image into quite an abstract Image which made it stand out. Other tools which I have used are halftone colour which basically messes up colour palete and creates some weird funny patterns.

In Harrys Afternoon session, I finished off my power point presentation  and started to practise it in the lecture theatre. I was fairly confident while I was practising my pitch. However, students in my class found that I was going on a bit which meant needed to get straight to the point.  There were also some things on my power point presentation which needed to be changed, so that the audience could read my text on my power point. For the rest of the lesson I was continuing with experimenting my techniques in photo shop.

On Friday, In Andy's morning session and Simon's afternoon session we were presenting our pitch to our clients. In my pitch I felt that it went well because was confident and managed to get all the main points of idea to my clients. After I had completed my pitch, I was watching everyone else's pitches. I found this useful as I could compare mine to others.

Week 2- Production Schedule

In Tuesdays Afternoon session, I started to generate ideas to use for my final idea. I did this by creating a moodboard which helped me to look at the different things which people are interested in when they read magazines.  Some of the topics below which people like are vechiles, sports and movies. I also, did a mind map to show the different areas I have explored. At the end of the lesson I completed my contigency plan, so that I know how to solve any problems by refering back to my contigency plan. Here is the moodboard & mind map.

On Wednesday's morning session with Andy, I started to complete all the research. The first piece of research which I was doing was the constraints. In this piece of work, I had to include all the things which affected the final product. Some of these constraints are the legal and ethical. Legal and Ethical are the copyright and racism & discrimination issues. Other constraints could be the time and the limitations of your target audience.

In Harry's Afternoon session I looked at some magazines to show me an example of what my magazine layout should be. I looked at the magazine source and scanned some pages in which I thought will help to get a retro look to my magazine. Here are some of the images;

On Fridays, In Andy's morning session I continued to do my research and I managed to finish everything in this session and started to create my pitch. In Simon's afternoon session we looked at the different types of layouts of magazines. As an exercise we had to find one particular page from a range of magazines  which we found interesting in the design layout of the page. I choose a page which was interesting because it's lay out was in the form of a website. After we did this, Simon introduced to us  Adobe Illustrator techniques to use for our text. I found this quite useful because I'll use this when it comes to designing my magazine. We had to do a 750 word essay on this for the rest of the lesson.

Week 1- Introduction To The Publishing Project

  In this Publishing Project, I have been given a brief by my client to respond to.  I have read the brief and analysis it for all the key details which will help me to create my final product. I have to pitch my to my Clients by the 18th of March and I have to produce the final product by the 28th March.  In the first week, I have produced a production schedule to help me work productively in this assignment.

On Tuesdays Afternoon session I was looking at different briefs to get an idea of how the are briefs are presented and different types of briefs there are. I learnt that there are 5 different types of brief;

- Contractual Brief

- Formal Brief

- Negotiated Brief

- Informal Brief

- Tender Brief

We also did a word document on how we would respond to one of the brief we looked at. In addition, to this work we had do an assignment on explaining the important aspects of a brief.  I started to complete this assignment task which was due in on the following Friday.

On Wednesdays morning session with Andy, I continued with this word document and I managed to complete this assignment ready to hand in on Friday. In Harry's afternoon session, I started to write up my skills profile for this project and I also started to,  create my production schedule so that I can follow my schedule and complete it.

On Friday's morning session I continued on my production schedule by doing the initial aims for my ASH brief. I print screened all my questionaires and explained each one and making final decisions for my idea. In Simon's afternoon session, We were looking at the different Image formats. This was really interesting as we were looking at the advantages and disadvantages of each format. For example, TIFF is  used for storing images and has incredible quality. However, a disadvantage was that the file size is ridiculous huge. This was one of the few formats we looked at in class. At the end of the class we were asked to write a 750 asignment about raster and vector images.

Here is some of the assignment ;

These two different formats are used in a lots of different software’s. The image above is showing two different software’s which is Photoshop and Illustrator. Adobe Photoshop is used for Image manipulation and uses bitmap instead of vector because bitmap has a higher resolution.  Adobe Illustrator uses vector because  the quality is good and the quality can’t be reduced in any form of compression.   Adobe Illustrator is used for magazines and designing templates because I can see from one of the options that you can Illustrate your work in pre-custom templates.

 JPEG Images
              JPEG Image                                                                                JPEG Image ( Compressed Too Many Times)

JPEG is form of compression used to reduce the file size, this is a good advantage of this file extension. However, continuing to repeat this process on the same file  can be really bad for the quality, doing it too many times could  make the photo out of focus and this is a bit disadvantage of JPEG.  JPEG is the main form of compression for bitmap images, so when its come to Photoshop you’ll be using a lot of JPEG because it saved in the compression of a JPEG.  It’s always better to save the file as a Psd and then  save a copy as a JPEG to be used in other software.  Another advantage  of JPEG Images is that it doesn’t uses up a small amount of the computer memory, this means that you can open up multiple JPEG without slowing down the computer.  One last disadvantage of JPEG Images is that you can’t zoom on a JPEG because it will be out of focus and it will be pixelated.
Here is a example below of zooming in on a JPEG Image:

Vector Images
Vector Images are made up of shapes and lines simulated by a computer. Vector Image would usually show an outline of an image.  Some of the reasons why a vector Image is not that popular is because it’s limited to the amount of colours you can use and the lines which you can create the images with. The advantages of vector images are that it’s easy to represent a geometric Image with vector images. Another advantage is that if you zoom in on a section, none of the quality is lost which is really good. Also, any form of compression made to vector images again doesn’t affect the quality.

The disadvantages of  vector images is that you can’t use vector images for photographic image because  the quality isn’t good enough and it won’t capture the detail photographers will want.  Unfortunely another disadvantage of vector images is that most vector images have to be drawn because vector graphics is quite expensive. Here is an example of some vector image software below;
